Copilot Studio evolves with GPT-5 and WhatsApp integration: the future of conversational agents

August has been a key month for the development of conversational agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio.

Microsoft has rolled out GPT-5, its next-generation language model, into the Copilot Studio catalog. At the same time, the direct publishing channel to WhatsApp has been enabled, allowing agents to reach end users more efficiently.

In our previous article we highlighted how intelligent feedback drives continuous improvement in conversational agents. In this one, we present the latest updates—another step forward in optimizing automated communication and user interaction.

1. GPT-5 available in Copilot Studio

GPT-5 provides Copilot Studio conversational agents with a new level of intelligence, speed, and security.

The update enables more consistent and accurate experiences, adapting to different types of tasks and levels of complexity.

Below are the main new features and advantages GPT-5 brings to agents:

  • Immediate access: Since August 7, GPT-5 has been available in early update environments and will soon roll out to all environments.
  • Smart “Auto” mode: The real-time router automatically switches between two versions of the model depending on the task:
    • High-speed model for quick responses and simple tasks.
    • Deep reasoning model for complex requests requiring analysis, context, or detailed planning.
  • Greater capacity and consistency: GPT-5-powered agents deliver more accurate contextual understanding, coherent responses in long conversations, and reliable task execution.
  • Enhanced security: GPT-5 has one of the strongest safety profiles against prompt injection, malware generation, and other adversarial scenarios.
  • Cost predictability: GPT-5 uses the same token system as GPT-4, avoiding unexpected billing issues.

2. Direct publishing to WhatsApp: simple and fast

The integration with WhatsApp allows agents to reach millions of users directly from Copilot Studio, streamlining deployment and improving interaction with customers and internal teams.

Key considerations for publishing agents on WhatsApp include:

  • Operational WhatsApp channel: Azure Communication Services (ACS) is used as the intermediary.
  • Business benefits: The integration simplifies the deployment of conversational agents, enabling broader user reach without additional applications.
  • Steps to configure the channel:
    1. Confirm the agent is published in Copilot Studio.
    2. Go to the Channels section and select WhatsApp.
    3. Configure the Azure subscription and corresponding ACS resource.
    4. Select the phone number and deploy the agent.
    5. Scan the QR code to start the interaction.
  • Adaptive Cards supported: Only three adaptive card types are allowed in WhatsApp: Action.Submit (buttons), Input.ChoiceSet (selections), and Action.OpenUrl (links).
  • Prerequisites:
    • Create an ACS resource in Azure.
    • Have a Meta-approved WhatsApp Business number.
    • Configure Event Grid Viewer and the inbound SMS subscription.
    • Link the WhatsApp Business account.
  • Data compliance warning: Interactions flow into WhatsApp and may fall outside the organization’s compliance boundaries.

At Bravent, we can help deploy agents on WhatsApp that enhance customer service by reaching users directly, delivering instant responses, and leveraging native WhatsApp features such as location sharing or image analysis.

It is also worth remembering that Copilot Studio already enabled orchestration of multiple agents in a coordinated way—something that, combined with WhatsApp integration, greatly expands multichannel interaction possibilities.

3. Key implications and recommendations

With GPT-5 and WhatsApp integration, it is essential to apply best practices to maximize agent value and improve user experience:

  • Make the most of GPT-5: The high-efficiency model is suitable for quick queries, while the deep reasoning model is recommended for complex interactions.
  • Promote multichannel agents: WhatsApp broadens the reach of agents and improves global accessibility.
  • Prioritize privacy: Data flows must be evaluated and compliance policies enforced.
  • Turn GPT-5 and WhatsApp into a competitive advantage: Together, they optimize automation, support, and both internal and external marketing.

4. Conclusion

These updates represent a significant leap in the capabilities and reach of conversational agents:

  • GPT-5 is now available, transforming the way agents reason and communicate.
  • WhatsApp is now an enabled channel, making publishing and user access easier on a massive platform.
