Power Apps Plan Designer: the new copilot to create solutions in minutes

The Power Platform universe never ceases to amaze us. In recent months we’ve seen how Microsoft has been incorporating more and more generative AI capabilities into its tools, and now it’s Power Apps’ turn with a new feature that promises to revolutionize the way we design business solutions: Power Apps Plan Designer.

What is Power Apps Plan Designer?

It is a new experience (currently in preview) that allows you to create applications from a natural language description. Until now, with features like describe it to design it, we could generate basic apps by explaining what we wanted. But Plan Designer goes a step further: it not only generates the application, it also proposes user roles, tables, data relationships, and associated experiences.
In other words, it’s no longer just an assistant to “draw screens,” but a true functional design copilot.

From idea to prototype in minutes

The experience begins with a simple prompt. For example:
“Employees need to record their vacation time and managers need to approve it.”
With this very basic sentence, Plan Designer is capable of:

Defining the business problem: employees record vacation time, managers approve it.
Identifying roles: employee and manager, each with their responsibilities.
Generating tables and relationships in Dataverse: employees, managers, vacation requests, blocked dates.
Creating ready-to-use apps:
- App for employees (request, edit, cancel vacation).
- App for managers (approve, reject, view calendars, generate reports).
- Blocked dates management (for example, fiscal close or peak workload periods).

In addition, it automatically adds sample data, which makes it easier for us to test and present the solution from minute one.

And what about flows?

An interesting detail: Plan Designer already shows the Power Automate flows that could complement the solution (such as notifications for new requests). However, for now these are not created automatically, but must be configured separately. Even so, it’s a key step because it gives us the complete map of what the solution should include.

Potential for fusion teams

One of the most powerful points is that Plan Designer brings solution creation closer to both professional developers and citizen developers.

• For the former, it speeds up the initial phase and reduces repetitive work.
• For the latter, it opens the door to quickly prototyping without advanced technical knowledge.

That said, Microsoft insists that these types of solutions should always be created within a framework of responsibility and collaboration, ideally in mixed teams (fusion teams) that combine business and IT.

• The quality of the result depends heavily on how precise and clear you are when describing the problem. If your prompt is vague, it may generate something generic that you’ll then need to refine a lot.
• Some suggested functions (for example certain automated flows) may not be fully ready for production use, so some additional work is required.
• If you don’t have Dataverse or the right permissions, what you can do is limited.
• Like many AI tools, it is constantly evolving, which means that something that works one way today may change in future versions (improvements, fixes, interface changes, limitations).
